These are the mailing list etiquette posting guidelines
- Use a proper subject line
- Don't use something like "Help!" , "Check this out" , "Cool". Try something more descriptive yet not too long like "Synaptic lock-file locked?", "Unable to mount / read / write NTFS partition using captive-ntfs".
- Do not troll in the mailing list
- Definition of trolling
Deliberately posting false information in order to elicit responses from people who really want to help. It's like shouting, "GANDHI IS NOT A FREEDOM FIGHTER", so that a sincere Gandhian would come up with all efforts of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi in the Freedom Movement.
- Definition of trolling
- Off topic and Job posts
- If you want to talk about things not concerning linux ( known as off-topic posts ) use [OT] in subject line. But, don't misuse to troll the mailing list. If you would like to post JOB opportunities tag it with a [JOB] or [COMMERCIAL] tag. Of course Jobs should be related to GNU/Linux

- Never top-post
- Definition of top-posting
- Example of a top-post:
Top-posting is disturbing because it makes the message harder to read,as we have to scroll down a lot to see the context of the message. And it doesn't let youunderstand the flow of discussion> > What's wrong with top-posting?
- Always use bottom-posting:
> > What is ubuntu? It is an ancient african word and a Free & Open Source GNU/Linux operating system.
- Definition of top-posting
- Do not over-quote
- Quote only those lines to which you are giving a reply to.
- Example of a over-quote:
> Do not over-quote.> I hope> you are getting> what I mean.Understood.
- A proper reply:
> Do not over-quoteUnderstood.
- Do not post HTML messages and styled text
- Not everyone uses mail clients that can handle HTML messages. So they get garbled text instead. And in any way, Email
- should never be in HTML and be always in plain text. HTML is for the web, not Email.
- Do not send attachments
- Not all people use gmail. People might not have space for attachments. Upload the file somewhere and type the URL of the file in the list ( Not as a link as that would be a HTML message :-) ).
